If you find me at a steakhouse, you can bet I'm ordering my cut of meat medium, not well. At the bar I'm always a shaken, not stirred kind of girl and in the morning I'll take that cup of joe with one cream, please. See? Everyone has their specific preferences when it comes to food, and in this particular recipe, you'll learn to deviate from the norm and take your chips baked, not fried.
I experimented with some random ingredients I had around the kitchen (as I often do) and found a simple and much healthier way to dip into your favorite salsa or hummus.
I present to you, the homemade baked tortilla chip.
Ingredients:
1 package of tortillas (I used whole wheat flour tortillas, but any kind will work!)
Olive oil
Salt
Start by drizzling about 1/2 teaspoon of oil on one side of the tortilla.
Using a pastry brush, evenly cover the tortilla with the oil. Sprinkle with salt. Flip and repeat process on the other side. Do this for all the tortillas in your package.
Stack the oil and salted tortillas on top of each other. With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut into quarters.
Realign tortillas and slice again to make 8 equal triangles.
Place tortilla pieces on a greased cookie sheet or pizza stone. Sprinkle with salt once again. Bake at 375 degrees for 9 minutes. Remove and turn chips with kitchen tongs. Return to oven and bake an additional 4-5 minutes.
Serve with your favorite dips for a perfect summer picnic addition!
If you're looking for some variety, try squeezing some lime juice on the chips before baking. You could also add additional spices with the salt to turn up the heat! Try paprika, cayenne pepper, or chili powder for starters. 😋🔥
You could also go for a sweet taste by replacing the salt with a cinnamon/sugar mixture! This would go well with a fruit tray or fruit salsa. 😋🍓🍊🍐🍌🍍
Regardless of your preferred variation, one bite and I think you'll join me in choosing your chips as baked, not fried.
Happy cooking, happy eating my friends!
